How do I update a SCORM file without losing student progress in the gradebook?

I need to update an existing SCORM package in our LMS, but I need to ensure that the scores and completion status already recorded in the gradebook for our current learners are not lost. What is the recommended workflow to overwrite or replace this file while preserving student progress? Specifically, if I use the "overwrite" feature, will students currently in-progress have their data reset to 0? Thanks for your help. 😅

Here's the workaround I tend to use: import the updated SCORM package as a new assignment, copy its launch URL (from the External Tool field in the assignment settings), paste that URL into the old assignment that you wish to preserve, and keep the new assignment unpublished. I usually mark the new assignment as "do not delete" because doing so will break the launch URL eventually.

There ought to be a better way to do this, and perhaps there is one that I'm just not aware of, but this has worked fine for me. It can get messy if you must do this several times in a course because of the duplicate assignments.
