After the current trial period for various IgniteAI features is over, will this still be a free Canvas feature or will it be a paid add-on product?

While IgniteAI Grading Assistance for SpeedGrader is marketed as a tool that enhances consistency and efficiency, it also introduces several risks that shouldn’t be underestimated. The platform emphasizes that its goal is to provide “helpful, transparent support—not automation without oversight,” and while that intention is admirable, I’m not convinced it’s grounded in reality. In practical use, there is little preventing instructors from leaning too heavily on AI‑generated suggestions and allowing the tool to become a shortcut rather than a support.

Even though the feature is framed as assisting educators rather than replacing their judgment, instructors could still use it to rapidly grade student work without giving it the careful review it deserves. The tool cannot confirm whether a teacher has evaluated the quality of the AI‑generated feedback, verified alignment with rubric criteria, or critically engaged with the student’s submission. If educators begin accepting AI‑suggested comments at face value, grading could become more superficial, potentially undermining learning outcomes rather than enhancing them.

This also raises concerns related to Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) in distance education. If AI expedites grading but weakens the instructor’s instructional presence, the tool could inadvertently worsen existing compliance challenges. Students who already feel distanced in asynchronous online courses may find the feedback even more impersonal or generic, further diminishing their sense of connection to the instructor.

Additionally, student perception matters. If learners become aware that instructors are using AI to evaluate their work, some may feel their teachers are “calling it in,” especially if the feedback lacks a personal touch. There is also a fairness concern: students may wonder why instructors are permitted to use AI to reduce their workload while students themselves are restricted from using AI to complete coursework. Without clear communication and consistent expectations, this asymmetry can erode trust.

On top of that, it will be interesting—and potentially concerning—to see how institutions choose to implement and message this tool. How schools frame the purpose of IgniteAI internally, how they communicate its role to faculty, and how transparently they present its use to students will likely have a major impact on whether it’s accepted, tolerated, or resisted. If a majority of instructors at an institution begin adopting it, students may form a collective perception that grading has become automated or depersonalized, which could further undermine confidence in the fairness and integrity of the evaluation process.

In short, while the tool’s goals are well‑intentioned, its real‑world use could unintentionally weaken assessment quality, reduce meaningful instructor engagement, harm student trust, and create perceived inequities around AI use. Efficiency is valuable—but not at the expense of authentic, human‑centered teaching.

Finally, regarding AI product pricing, we are still waiting on concrete pricing details for the Ignite AI products, which makes planning and evaluation difficult.

There are many of us who would rather not have the "tool" any where near our digital classrooms. Will there be easy opt outs or even the possibility for a version of Canvas that is free from all such "tools". (Yes the scare quotes are used intentionally.)

I am hearing concerns from my often stressed and overworked constituents about every aspect of AI use that range from surveillance and privacy to concerns about developing cognitive debt. I might even make the argument that the marketing seems aimed at this vulnerable segment of instructors that a pressured by administrative focuses on efficiency and ROI instead of a focus on teaching and learning. For those who succumb to that pressure there are real concerns that the "tool" will be de-skilling in its application and start a chain of cognitive debt as it preys on them. I will not even add the environmental impact art of the argument against AI use here as it is its own priori argument of sorts that we have ignored to arrive at this concern.

There are a lot of conflicting opinions on how AI ought to be leveraged in teaching and learning workflows, which is exactly why we've made this and other IgniteAI features opt-in rather than enabled by default. Thanks, @YasiAfsharnive; I appreciate the clarification, and agree that thoughtful application is key for tool essential. One remaining challenge on our end is the timeline for Ignite AI product pricing, especially for IgniteAI Grading Assistance in SpeedGrader. We’ve been asking for a few months now, but the only consistent response has been that pricing is still “under evaluation.”

I understand why: there’s a major unknown around token usage per instructor action, and any model needs to realistically account for how many AI calls institutions should expect per course, per assignment, and throughout grading workflows. Without at least some estimated usage ranges or pricing tiers, it’s difficult for us to plan budgets or evaluate whether adoption is feasible at scale.

It’s also an interesting approach to leave enablement and cost responsibility up to each institution. That flexibility makes sense in principle, but it makes it even more important for us to have concrete pricing details so we can determine whether enabling the feature is sustainable. We don’t want to turn it on for faculty to experiment with, invest in training and support, and then later discover we can’t cover the long‑term costs — which would force us to remove it after faculty have already built it into their workflows.

If you’re able to share when more specific pricing information will be available (even a general timeframe), that would be extremely helpful for those of us preparing for upcoming budget cycles.
