Why is my canvas saying access denied

You probably clicked a link to a page, assignment or module that has not been published yet.

If you think you should have access to it now, then contact your instructor, but they may have received an email about it already.

Last term I posted a link to the "Final Exam" in the beginning of the term, but I didn't publish it until closer to the end, and got a few automated emails about students trying to access it and that it was locked.

One other possibility is that your instructor might have provided you with a link to content that exists in another course that you do not have access to.

You can tell this by:

looking at the link of where you currently are in Canvas and see the number that appears after "courses" (it would look something like: .instructure.com/courses/COURSE_NUMBER" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://.instructure.com/courses/COURSE_NUMBER)
looking at the link for where you are trying to go
if the course numbers are different, what I described is what is happening
