I am not familiar with a "Participant" role in Canvas. The roles that come "out of the box" with Canvas are outlined in this Canvas administrator Guide:
What user roles and permissions are available in Canvas?
Maybe your school's Canvas administrator created an additional role called "Participant" that has some special configurations/permissions. You'd want to have a conversation with that person at your school to see what the difference is.

In Canvas there are only five roles,
Student, Teacher, Ta, Designer, Observer
If you have a different role, it is important to contact the administrator.
