For the course listings in Canvas Catalog, is there a limit to the image size we can use? Is there a recommended size?
Hi, Steve,
I'm sorry no one has responded to your question, but just in case you still need an answer, all the Catalog documentation, as well as the image dialog windows in Catalog, have been updated to reference image dimensions rather than image size. For best results in listings, images should be 768 pixels high and 1.050 pixels wide; supported formats include PNG, JPG, GIF, and SVG.
Hope that helps!
Erin
If anyone else new to Canvas and the catalog finds this question, here is some more info to be aware of that I wish I'd known early on: The image size is different than the one used when creating the course. So, our compromise was to create a standard cover image size that works in both.
Because the entire team does not have a suitable photo editor, we use Powerpoint. I created a "template" with guidelines that demarcate the left and right sides. When the course creator stays within those margins the dimensions are correct. Then the "current slide" is saved as a jpg, png (whatever you prefer) and we use it in both the course and catalog.
The 768x1050 px specification does not show my graphic correctly.
Here's my graphic created as 768x1050 pixels:
Here's how it looks in my Catalog:
It is cutting off my words at the bottom of the graphic. I’ve tried this multiple times, and it appears to LOAD correctly in the preview….but once it is saved it cuts off the graphic.
I sure wish the Course Card from Canvas would copy over automatically to the Catalog listing. That would be FABULOUS!!
If you know the dimensions that upload correctly, please let me know.
Looks like several years later, and we have the same issue. Tier 1 didn't know how to fix.
And here we are in 2024 without any real answers either. The resource documents are much lower resolution than anyone we've talked with has used to get decent images. svg seemed to work better when scaled for us.

@sbarry2 If this is still accurate here are the dimensions: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Resource-Documents/Canvas-Catalog-Logo-Guidelines/ta-p/560432
We have a training that people can take which is set as a canvas course. But before they take the training, we want them to have the prerequisite of taking a different course A in catalog. I don't want to set up a program because they may not want to take the training if they took course A and decided that training isn't…
Currently, the listings filters only allow filtering by Listing Creation Date. Is there a way to filter by course's start or end dates instead? In our case, listings are created at various times, but we track revenue and enrollment by academic term/semester (which, I can specify using date ranges on course dates), not by…
We have had several failed enrolments caused (on most occasions) by system outages. Unfortunately we only find out because the learner complains - although this prompts a search for others which we can be proactive for. Reporting is needed to identify these learners who have commenced an order but have failed to enrol. We…
I do see that one can gift a course using bulk enrollments, but it would help if this were more user-friendly. It is unclear to users what a "bulk enrollment" means and how to use it as a gift. Can there be a simple "Gift This Course" label and feature, along with a short video tutorial on how to use the Gift This Course…
I decided to try out Nudging. I have a test course in Canvas with 2 assignments (one quiz, one file submission). No modules. Removed course dates and deleted any existing sections. Created a listing for it with 14 days to completes and then enrolled with my gmail address. Had our director of ID do the same. Created a nudge…
