When will the replacement become available?

I prepare pre-service teachers in Utah to use Canvas in their future roles as K-12 educators. We loved using the free site for teachers for learning how to design modules and the various types of pages. Since that site is discontinued, when will the replacement become available? I appreciate why it had to close, but I would love to know what the plan is going forward.

Hello! Big news today: Instructure just announced Canvas Lite. It's a free, simple way for individual educators to build and deliver course content to their learners, no institution or full Canvas license required.

Canvas Lite launches on September 30. There's also a final access window running September 30 through October 6. Zach Pendleton wrote up all the details in the FFT Users Blog! It’s worth a read if you want the full picture.

Your use case for the FFT instance of Canvas is similar to mine, @RyanCain83149788. At my college we don't provision user accounts to any of our systems until newly hired employees complete all their processing. This presents a challenge for our new instructional faculty, for whom Canvas experience is not among the hiring criteria. So every semester I hear from their deans and department chairs asking how our new colleagues can gain experience using Canvas. For the fall 2026 rush, they will be limited to screenshots, video recordings, and links to the (helpful!) Canvas Guides. But those don't substitute for the hands-on tinkering that their spring 2026 colleagues got to have via FFT. I'm also looking forward to the resumption of FFT access soon.

I also need to know this. I'm prepping parent communication for this upcoming school year, and it is incredibly stressful to not know if I need to delete the Canvas information or not. They said, "enhanced Canvas product for former Free for Teacher users launching this fall," but fall and the new school year are just days away, and there is no information at all about an enhanced product.

Need this too…I know administrators at the University level who are now roadmapping an exit from Canvas due to the lack of communication on the Free for Teachers product. If they can't be relied on for basic communication and respect with FFT, can you really trust them with your entire school's success?
