Free-For-Teacher Open Window Extension

Free for Teachers opened on July 28 at 12:00 am, ET. In the first hours, our internal teams validated access, but many users experienced errors.

To ensure ample access time, we're extending the open window by 12 hours. Free for Teachers will now close on July 30 at 11:59 am, ET.

Thank you so much, Renee! This extension is very much appreciated! I am hoping that we won't have to wait long after the closure of this access window for Instructure to announce the new Canvas FFT Replacement Service. Again, we hope the new service remains free, but if regulatory compliance and security updates realistically require a hybrid freemium or paid model to exist (in which case users like me would, unfortunately, have to permanently transition towards an alternative LMS), we former FFT users understand. For now, we appreciate Instructure's efforts to allow FFT users to redeem their content before the permanent system upgrades take effect.

Do you know when there will be news about the new FFT product or a smaller paid version? The website just says, "enhanced Canvas product for former Free for Teacher users launching this fall." Fall and the new school year are now just days away, so any information or timeline would be greatly appreciated.

I'm incredibly frustrated and am hoping someone can finally help me. I have made multiple attempts to get answers regarding my former Canvas Free-for-Teacher account and have received no meaningful response.

I understand that Free-for-Teacher was discontinued following the security incident. What is so upsetting is that I was given no meaningful opportunity to retrieve courses that I have spent hundreds of hours creating and have used year after year.

I did not even know my account had become inaccessible until I went to retrieve my course to prepare for the new school year and could no longer access it. I began searching online for answers and eventually discovered the notification in my spam folder.

I also did not receive or see the notification about the final July 28–30 access window. By the time I discovered what had happened and began contacting Instructure around July 30, it was too late. I have since contacted Instructure multiple times, including Canvas Support, where I was told my request would be escalated. I have still received no meaningful follow-up.

I am not asking for Free-for-Teacher to be restored for ongoing use. I am simply asking for an opportunity to retrieve or receive an export of the course content I created. I have spent years developing these courses, and rebuilding them from scratch has already required an enormous amount of time.

I understand why Instructure had to respond to a serious security incident. However, I am asking Instructure to recognize that some educators did not receive the necessary communication in time and provide a reasonable way for us to recover the instructional content we created.

Please connect me with someone who can actually review my situation and determine whether my course content can be recovered or exported. I would sincerely appreciate a response from a person rather than another automated message.

@CarolineJudd I want to acknowledge how deeply frustrating we know this is for so many. We are not able to provide content from Free-for-Teacher at this moment, and for that I'm sorry. We are working on communications for the solution that will replace Free-for-Teacher and hope to share those out soon, along with more clarity for educators unable to retrieve their content in the previous open windows.

I've been asking since July and I haven't received any meaningful responses. I've given up and I'm working with my IT department to figure out how to collect assignments via a Sharepoint site instead.

Hello! Today, Instructure announced Canvas Lite. It's a simple, no-cost way for individual educators to build and deliver course content to their learners, without needing an institution to purchase a full Canvas license.
