When will we get answers or access?

I'm a teacher and graduate student who is finishing their master's in education technology. Well, I was….until this security event happened. I've been patient, hoping there would be a path forward with Canvas. My university recommended I use Canvas as their top choice for building a course to use with research participants. My course has been built for months and I was days away from launching with my test group when the security lockdown happened. Now my work that took months to plan for and weeks to build have been locked away with no answers about how to get even a sliver of it back.

Instructure said they would put me on a list to receive an export package of my course. They explained I would be emailed a link with a chance to download. No email from Instructure has come.

Then I was told there would be next steps announced on May 26th. Nothing yet.

Will this nightmare end? Do I still get to graduate in July? I have 4 weeks left to qualify for graduation. Without answers from Instructure, I'm gasping for air.

@Privacy_Team, What is happening with FFT access and/or the export package list?

Instructure sent out an email today announcing that FFT will be available for a limited time."

"We wanted to make you aware that we are temporarily restoring access to the product in a secure, limited capacity from 12 am ET on May 28 through 11:59 pm ET on May 29 to enable educators who rely on the platform to safely download course content and close out the school year."

"9. When will Free for Teachers (FFT) be available again, and how can instructors access their
course content in the meantime to export or migrate to paid instances?
Free-for-Teachers will be reinstated once we have implemented additional safeguards to further
strengthen the platform’s security. Access will be limited to teachers, and existing teachers will be
required to complete additional identity verification through a third-party verification service using
government-issued identification to restore access to their accounts. No new accounts will be
created during this limited restoration period.
In addition, we have removed all administrative and support functionality from the
Free-for-Teacher platform until June 30
th to prevent unauthorized access to those functions.
Users will still be able to view course content and teach through the end of the semester to help
maintain pedagogical continuity."

How did you get on a list to get an export package? I've emailed in twice and called in twice asking for this but everybody has said this cannot be done.

Thank you! Would you be willing to send me the full text of the email to my inbox from this community? I did not receive that email. I'm not associated with a paying institution, so I suspect it was only sent to paying customers.

They didn't provide additional information about how to access FFT. My sense from the email is that you will be able to log in during that time if you already have an account. Maybe someone from Instructure can chime in.

Someone sent me the text of the email received by users from the paid environment. It didn't provide any specifics - just that there would be a time period where existing accounts can log in to download information.

I'm so scared this will be another failed solution. I wish Instructure understood that for some FFT accounts, this is our lives they are messing with as they ignore us or cast us to the side as unworthy "free" users. I'm in the depths of a culmination of 2.5 years of graduate courses, and I have a young family waiting for the return of their mom and a second income. If I can't recover months of work, I will not be okay.

Kristin, will everyone be able to access Canvas during that 24-hour window, or only the people who received the email? Also, does this info about downloading the courses mean that this will all be gone when that 24-hour window closes? We're very confused by the mixed messages. We keep hearing that Instructure is dedicated to keeping the FFT option, but at the same time, we feel ignored through all of this and now instructions to get on and get our stuff during an extremely short window of time.

Hi! During that 48-hour window, any Canvas Free for Teacher user will have access to their course content, not just those who received an email.

In the coming weeks, Instructure share more information about how we plan to support our Free for Teacher users. The Free for Teacher Users Hub will be the best place to look for those updates.

Thanks for clarifying that it's 48 hours and not 24. I read the message in such a panic I interpreted it as noon to noon. That takes a little bit of the pressure off! So, bottom line, should everyone download all their content and assume it won't be there in whatever form FFT returns? Knowing that really makes a difference as we decide what we should do on Thursday and Friday. Thanks!
