Summary
Issuers can add specific Canvas assignments as pathway requirements. Pathway progress reflects learners’ actual graded submissions for each assignment, whereas previously, requirements were based only on overall course completion.
Notes:
- To use Canvas assignments as pathway requirements, there must be at least one active Canvas Credentials LTI connection.
- Letter Grade and GPA grading models are currently not supported and remain disabled.
- Supported grading types:
- Points
- Percentage
- Completion
- Assignment requirements inherit grading settings directly from Canvas; the grading model is imported and read-only in Pathways.
- If grading settings change in Canvas, the requirement is flagged and can be resynced to stay aligned.
- Requirements always reflect the learner’s latest graded submission, combined with the configured threshold and timing rules.
- This Phase 2 release builds on the previous course-level integration in Phase 1, adding assignment-level support for more precise academic alignment.
- Manual Experiences remain available for capturing learning outside of Canvas.
- Assignment grading follows the Canvas setup, and thresholds are automatically checked against Canvas grading limits to ensure accuracy.
Change Benefit
Institutions can tie pathway progress to specific graded assignments instead of only overall course completion. This provides:
- More precise tracking of learner performance
- Alignment with mastery at the assignment level
- Automatic progress updates when grades change
- Less manual verification for issuers
Feature Workflow
Navigate to a pathway step, In the Requirement Type drop down menu [1], select the Canvas Assignment option [2].
Depending on the configuration, use the Search field to find an assignment [1] or select a single assignment in the course [2]. Then, click the Select button [3].
Set the threshold based on the assignment’s Canvas grading type [1], and optionally define a trigger date [2]:
- If the assignment is Points-based, set a minimum points threshold (validated against the Canvas maximum).
- If the assignment is Percentage-based, set a minimum percentage threshold.
- If the assignment is Completion-based, no numeric threshold is required.
Note: Assignments display their grading type as defined in Canvas. The grading model is imported automatically and is read-only in Pathways.
