Hi everyone. I am keen to get my head around the new Portfolio tool in Canvas that can be linked to assessments (if my understanding is correct). Has anyone adopted it as yet for gathering workplace evidence????
So far my understanding (at least when I tested October, things may have changed since then) was that Evaluation Portfolios can be reviewed by an instructor/other teaching role to note if they have been fully completed or not, but not graded with a mark via Speedgrader or gradebook.
There is linking to assessments in terms of creating evaluation portfolios where some of the required artefacts students have to include are assessed items (assignments) from Canvas. i.e. you can nest Canvas assignments into an evaluation portfolio as artefacts, so the work from the assignment and the grades/feedback provided in Speedgrader are then visible in the portfolio. An instructor could make specific Canvas assignments required to be included in the portfolio and I think these automagically port across for view once completed by the student. You would need to create these as Canvas assignments first and students would be submitting the artefact into Canvas assignments but they would then be housed holistically in the evaluation portfolio. These can be assignments that are located within the same Canvas course/shell as the evaluation portfolio or could include assignments that students have already completed across other courses/shells too, so that would allow an instructor visibility of work across Canvas courses.
To me, this means that currently both portfolio types are being considered as more of a holistic presentation method rather than assessment/evaluation method? (which seems odd given the name 'Evaluation portfolio' but perhaps the intention is to provide this functionality in future). Note: I haven't looked at whether evaluation portfolios can link to Canvas Outcomes at all. I can't find anything around that in the guides so I suspect not at this stage either but I would be interested to know as that could be useful, and a workaround to the lack of grading functionality especially for vocational education and/or competency based education. I'm not currently using Canvas portfolios just investigating same as you. I work in a Uni so our use cases are a little different from vocational education but I'm exploring portfolios for competency based learning and programmatic assessment so am watching this space with interest in case others offer further feedback!
You say "These can be assignments that are located within the same Canvas course/shell as the evaluation portfolio or could include assignments that students have already completed across other courses/shells too…" I don't believe this is currently possible—but it is exactly what we are looking for. We (we are a technical/vocational school 😊) would like completing the portfolio itself to be an Assignment. What we have currently is that students share their portfolios via a link and use the URL assignment type, but this doesn't allow us to link to a discrete "thing" in our informational pages (the way you can link to other course items).
Put simply, we are running into issues in communicating the task to students because the portfolio is tied to the user account rather than a course. It'd be much cleaner to be able to say "Access your evaluation portfolio here" than to have to provide the steps to find the correct eval portfolio under the student's profile. It would be handy if External Tool Assignment were one of the placements for the new Evaluation Portfolio.
But maybe we're missing something obvious? As you've experienced, the documentation is still a bit thin.
Until we are better versed in the new tool ourselves, our courses which need portfolios will likely be using third-party tools instead (which is not ideal).
First, I am very excited to learn that Canvas is giving attention to this much needed space in learning management systems. As schools continue to embrace competency-based learning, we need a better way for students to document their learning journey across and through course experiences. There is mention of tagging…
Not sure if this is the correct platform, but this is the most frustrating thing ever. I believe it worked before but all of a sudden it's stopped. Needless to say, I cannot use the Canvas Student app on my Mac Book because it will not show up, and using the internet option is not an option. Don't put something out that…
what is the best way to get books or how long does it take to get .
On 09/13 I noticed when I logged in to my account that I either get a lock symbol which means I do not have access to anything in Canvas or I open a blank page with no content. I have tried - resetting my password 3 times - reaching out to my professor - not very responsive - contacting IT at the college I attend - no help…
I am having difficulty when I try to upload a project. I have clicked on portfolio->add a new project. Then I fill in the relevant information and click publish. It asks Ready to publish? Then I click on the blue publish project button. It then says "Please prove you are not a robot." I can't get past this page. Has anyone…
