Recovering and Preventing Class Data Loss During SIS Sync

When certain properties of a class change in our SIS/Clever, the class is removed in Canvas by our sync and  unpublished empty classes are put in their place. When this happens we lose all grade/assignment info for the class. Is there any documentation on how to recover classes in this situation and ways to prevent it from happening?

@MichaelWinger Welcome! I actually posted what happens when there's a "teacher of record" change or equivalent for PowerSchool SIS in this post but it should be a similar situation with any SIS.

Assuming that the sections just moved into an empty class that's unpublished, you'll want to do a crosslist of the sections from the new course into the old course. This will ensure that the SIS will update the enrollments/sections. This will also restore grade/assignment info (as this is linked to enrollments in the course and does not follow the student along).

I can't speak to how to prevent it from happening as this is a community forum and we don't have access to your exact SIS integration setup, but that might be a question to ask the Canvas SIS support team on how exactly your SIS is setup to talk with Canvas.
