Textbook Integration Policies?

Hello!

I am looking to see if anyone's institution uses a specific textbook integration request policy (e.g. how many days prior to the start of a term must requests be submitted, etc.)? Whatever you have, I'd love to hear it. We are looking at how to best manage textbook integration requests from faculty members. Thanks!

At our institution, the timelines we use are actually very similar to what many other schools follow. From what we’ve seen, the norm across institutions is a minimum of about 6–12 weeks for reviewing and approving textbook or publisher integrations. Many universities also publish hard submission deadlines one semester in advance and pause new integrations during ‘freeze’ periods right before a term begins. That aligns pretty closely with our current policy, which requires 3–4 months (essentially one semester of lead time) for third‑party tool and textbook publisher integration requests that integrate with Canvas via LTI.

I do not have a specific answer for you but I would recommend anyone makes sure that they are in compliance with Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA).

The University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point has a resource available.

In the middle of that resource before the FAQ they say: In other words, by the time registration opens for students, they should be able to view not only the courses available but the textbooks (or other supplemental materials) that will be required for the course.

I should say few things though.

Depending on the integration and how widely it will be used, (1) as long as my Department has the ability to do a high-level evaluation of it, create it, and verify that it works, we are fine with creating them, (2) faculty need to feel that they have enough to to incorportate its resources into their course design because ultimately if the course is not designed well it will look back on them, and (3) faculty and students need to know who to contact if there are questions or problems but there is only so much that my Department can do.
