This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 2/4/26
Description:
When attempting to leave feedback on individual questions in a New Quizzes survey via SpeedGrader, the feedback does not save. After clicking ‘done’ to exit the comment edit mode, the UI suggests the comment is saved, but refreshing SpeedGrader causes the comment to disappear.
Additionally, the ‘update’ button is missing unless the ‘grade by question’ setting is enabled. When ‘grade by question’ is enabled, the ‘update’ button appears and allows the comment to be saved, but this action incorrectly resets the student’s grade to 0, even if they had previously received full credit for survey completion.
Expected behavior:
- Per-question feedback should save and persist for survey submissions.
- Saving feedback should not alter the student’s grade or reduce it to 0.
Workaround:
- Manually add fudge points to leave the grade at its full value, or ONLY leave non-question-specific comments on surveys by using the comments field to the right within SpeedGrader.
- General comments can still be left using the overall submission comment box, but this does not allow for question-specific feedback.
Steps to Reproduce:
Prerequisites: A course with a student enrolled.
- Create a graded New Quiz survey with at least one question.
- Submit the survey as a student.
- Open the submission in SpeedGrader.
- Attempt to leave a comment on a question and click ‘done’. The comment icon updates, but there is no ‘update’ button.
- Refresh the page-comment is lost.
- Enable ‘grade by question’ in SpeedGrader settings.
- Add a comment, click ‘done’, then ‘update’. The comment now saves, but the student’s grade is set to 0.
