Automatically get letter grades with enrollments?

I'd like to get letter grades with the enrollments from the API. I was just testing this, and was receiving nulls for the letter grades until I went into the course settings and enabled the course grading scheme. Rather than ask each teacher to change their course settings, is there a way to always get letter grades? Possibly to have all courses in the account enable a grading scheme?

As far as I can tell, each course must individually have a grading standard set. We've been doing this with the "update course settings" API call (Canvas LMS REST API Documentation).
