Hi everyone,
My organization would like to know when a syllabus was edited by an instructor. Does that action get timestamped anywhere?
@dranzolin this is a good question.
WIki pages all include a 'Page History' with timestamps.
But I am not able to find a reference to timestamps for the syllabus.
This seems so obvious I'm interested to see if anyone has a solution.
Side note....
We put minimal information in our syllabus page, and require faculty to upload an official syllabus document each semester.
The official document contains a timestamp, in case there is any question regarding whether or not the document has been updated. We have received good feedback from faculty on this, as it does not require them to learn HTML/CSS.
One way that I know works is using the Files API. Of course, this only works if the syllabus is a file upload...
Try the following URL in your browser (substitute your own values, of course):
https://:school.instructure.com/api/v1/courses/:course_id/files?per_page=100
This will return a list of all the file uploads for the course. It would take a bit of digging but you can find the last modified timestamp on there as well.
Edit: in fact, this below PowerShell snippet will give you all files on a given course that contain the string "syllabus", and shows you the name and last modified date.
$auth = ':api_key'Invoke-RestMethod 'https://school.instructure.com/api/v1/courses/:course_id/files?per_page=100' -headers @{'Authorization'="Bearer $auth"}) | Where {$_.display_name -like '*Syllabus*'} | select display_name, updated_at
This could more easily be solved if the Canvas API had a syllabus description endpoint. Maybe time for an idea/feature request?
At a technical level, if a user exists in two separate Canvas instances, is this a problem a Canvas Trust can address? If so, how? Can you add a trust(ed) login to an existing user account? Most of the (very limited) documentation I've found seems to focus on Trusts operating with enrollments, not users, but it does seem…
Hi everyone, I am seeking some insight into how Canvas LMS handles HTTP errors and how they are reflected in the logs versus the user interface. We are currently observing the following behavior in our environment: Log-only errors: We are seeing 500 (Internal Server Error) and 503 (Service Unavailable) errors recorded in…
I looked through the LTI Variable Substitutions documentation and while there are variable substitutions available for Canvas.term.name and Canvas.term.id (which is the Canvas incremented ID like "104"), I was surprised to see there was no option for Canvas.term.sisSourceId I tried testing other possible variants that may…
Summary:The Learning Mastery Gradebook allows drag-and-drop reordering of outcome columns, and this triggers a call to /api/v1/courses/:course_id/assign_outcome_order. The API returns 204 No Content (success), but the column order does not persist after page refresh. Steps to Reproduce: Open Learning Mastery Gradebook for…
I'm building a tool for my institution that imports grades from another LTI tool into Canvas so instructors can automate late assignment policies not otherwise supported by Canvas. I'm trying to use the LTIv1.3 ID which is readily available on the LTI-side as a link to the student record on Canvas, but I can't find the ID…
