Checkpoints and Availability

For anyone using checkpoints in discussions: Is there a way to set an "available until" date on the initial "reply to topic"? That is, not just set a due date for making a first post, but make it so students can't do that after the due date? Having students able to start a discussion assignment after the due date for the first post made a mess of my initial attempt at using this new structure.

Well, it wasn't intended as a suggestion for changing Canvas, but a question to other users of how to do something. Should I take your response as meaning that it's not currently possible to do what I asked about? (And that that's why it would be a suggestion?)

That's correct and something I should have made clear in my response. As you may know, the process for suggesting changes to Canvas has been going through a redesign and thus unavailable for the past few months. Now that the process has been reopened, we users again have a "best way" to make suggestions for improvement. Posting questions like you did is still an excellent way to start, as other Community members might have a solution to the challenge that you mention.

I wonder if it would make a difference to turn on the setting that prevents students from seeing their classmates' contributions before writing their own reply to the prompt. That would not prevent them from doing what you described, though it would likely be a good option to enable if/when your suggestion is adopted. One other suggestion is to use the late policies options for the gradebook so that missing submissions are automatically scored at 0%. That would at least make it easier from the Grades page to see which students had submitted their first post after the due date.

Thanks for the suggestions. But, as you say, they won't prevent students from doing what I described. I'll see if I can figure out how to share ideas in the new system.
