New and Improved Features

Enhanced Guide Navigation with Table of Contents

We've re-introduced and significantly improved the Table of Contents (TOC) feature for guide landing pages, making it easier than ever to find the information you need.

Comprehensive Listing: The TOC now displays a full list of all categories and guide articles available on the current page.
Quick Search: A new search functionality within the TOC allows you to quickly find specific guide titles within the page's structure.

Browser Checker Widget

We've added a new tool to help you troubleshoot and share your setup information:

Location: The Browser Checker widget is now available on a dedicated custom page, as well as embedded directly within specific troubleshooting guides.

Functionality: This widget instantly identifies and displays the browser and browser version you are currently using; platform and operating system; screen resolution; and enabled browser functionality such as javascript and cookies. It also indicates if you are using an updated version of your browser or if you need to update your browser.

The browser check widget on the custom page provides additional information.

The browser check widget embedded in troubleshooting guides provides a pared back experience with basic information.

Note: This widget is intended for basic troubleshooting only and may not provide accurate information for all devices. This tool pulls information from your browser but does not store any identifying information about you or your browser.

Category-Specific Search Buttons

To help you narrow down your results and find precise answers faster, we've implemented new search scoping options:

Scoped Search Buttons: When viewing a specific category, new buttons are now available that allow you to limit your search query to only articles within that exact category.

Buttons are being added to high traffic areas and will be added to additional areas over time.

To search within the current category, click the Search button.

This brings you to the scoped search page where you can enter your search terms to search within the specific category.

Thank you so much for this @Nathan Atkinson, especially the widget.

I have two questions about the new widget

Is there a version of the widget that is embeddable, so that we can use it somewhere else (which might also be helpful to see if cookies and cross-site tracking are working)?
How often will the widget's supported/detected web browsers be updated? I ask because:
1. right now, I see it looking for:
  1. Chrome: 145 and 144
  2. Firefox: 147 and 146
  3. Edge: 145 and 144
  4. Safari: 26.3 and 18 (I found some potentially wrong code that shows the widget is looking for "25" as the previous version and that is not possible because Apple went from 18 to 26)
2. web browsers (with the exception of Safari) are updated approximately every month (exact timing varies)

Thanks for the questions!

This widget is available on this page along with a couple other browser-related widgets. This page should be able to be embedded within Canvas courses (wherever we have our security settings set up to allow embedding), but I can't guarantee that everything will function the same when it's embedded within an iframe.

And you're correct, Safari should have been manually set to pull in 18 or 26 as the appropriate previous and current versions, but I didn't have it set up that way. I'm fixing this now and will adjust it as needed as we move to 26, 27, 28, etc.

This widget uses a third-party API to pull in browser versions and should be up to date generally within 24 hours of a browser version being updated.

Thank you, @Nathan Atkinson! I saw the https://community.instructure.com/en/check-browser page but I was not sure if there was a suppported way to take the widget and reuse it.

Unfortunately not, widgets can only be embedded on the Community site and then those pages can be iFramed onto other external pages.
