Roadmap item: Captions for all Canvas media

On the Roadmap for Q1 2026-Q2 2026 is the following: Captions for all Canvas media can be automatically generated and published, making it easy for educators to provide accessible content for learners in Canvas.

I'm not finding more details on this, but am I correct in assuming that "all Canvas media" isn't just Studio media? If so, would that include media created by students? I have an instructor that's asking specifically about students using the RCE to record media for a discussion.

This is for Canvas media, as you assumed. To be more precise about the “all Canvas media” aspect: the solution will allow creators to request captions directly for media embedded into course content. The only limitation is that the request option will be available exclusively for content added through the RCE, with the ability to edit and search caption content.

To respond to your question, access (i.e., who can request captions) will follow the existing RCE access model: for discussion replies specifically, this means both the student who posted the reply and the teacher who started the discussion will be able to request captions.
