We are committed to providing you with the most stable and reliable service possible, and that includes being transparent when issues arise. We want to provide an update following a temporary disruption some users experienced when attempting to log into Canvas recently.
The Incident
On January 12th, 2026, some Canvas users recently experienced issues logging into Canvas via the new Identity Service proxy (between 12:45 PM MST - 1:25 PM MST). Users who were already logged into Canvas were not impacted. The root cause was suspicious activity targeting our identity service that was promptly identified and mitigated. Our team quickly responded to this activity, and all users were able to log in successfully within a short time. No data was compromised or lost.
Our Immediate Mitigation and Next Steps
To ensure full protection against any future suspicious activity impacting our authentication service, we have made the decision to temporarily keep the new identity service proxy (redirects to the service provider) disabled for all customers across all instances and regions. Already onboarded customers will not experience any noticeable changes in their day to day as they continue using our existing identity service.
We are actively working with our service provider and internally to implement a comprehensive, validated mitigation strategy. We will not re-enable the proxy until this robust solution is fully in place. No action from already onboarded customers will be needed when the proxy service is re-enabled.
A Note for Onboarding Customers
Please be aware that this temporary measure may impact customers who were scheduled for onboarding within the past 2 weeks. Once the mitigation is in place, we’ll resume our onboarding activities. If your organization’s onboarding date was originally Jan 12th or Jan 19th, you will receive another email from Instructure indicating your revised onboarding date.
We apologize for the inconvenience this incident caused. We are committed to building robust strategies to prevent disruptions and ensure the stability you rely on.
