Hi all, is there a way to automatically assign a grade (points, letter or C/NC) to a discussion when students write a response - I'm thinking a feature similar to the graded survey feature in the old quizzes?
Thanks!
I don't believe there is a way to do this within discussions. I use Harmonize LTI and it allows for credit/no credit and milestones.
Hi @raskinj,
I do not think that this is possible, unless the API is used for discussion_topics and submissions.
It is not my intention to imply that you (or any graders) would not review a student's work and provide feedback or a response but I believe that with the amount of attention being drawn towards "Regular and Substantive Interaction" (RSI) that something like this would not draw enough attention to be considered as functionality that Instructure adds to Canvas.

Hi Doug,
Thanks for clarifying — that makes sense. That said, I do think there could still be real value in a feature that automatically marks discussions as Complete/Incomplete while leaving room for instructor feedback. It would help differentiate participation credit from qualitative feedback, making it easier for students to see that they’ve met basic engagement expectations without assuming that “Complete” reflects the depth or quality of their work. From an instructional perspective, it could streamline grading while still allowing instructors to provide meaningful guidance on content and engagement.
I appreciate your perspective.
Best, Jesse
Thanks for the tip!
