The clock ran out on Canvas Data 1 (CD1) in 2023, leaving Eastern Washington University without its go-to source for crucial Canvas course info. We knew a powerful SQL database for Canvas Data 2 (CD2) was the dream, but the price tag turned it into a nightmare. However, the need for quick access to Canvas data for reporting purposes remained. Like many institutions, we needed to manage costs while maintaining access to essential data quickly and efficiently. So, we rolled up our sleeves and built something new: a fully serverless data pipeline powered by AWS.
Using Lambda, S3, Glue, and Athena, we built a dynamic, scalable system that collects, stores, and queries Canvas Data 2 (CD2) on demand without the hefty price tag of traditional databases. Following a year of operational deployment, this approach has proven its merit. We've slashed costs, boosted flexibility, and future-proofed our data strategy.
