Discussion Insights leverages AI to assess student contributions in Canvas Discussions, helping instructors evaluate relevance and engagement at a glance. Key benefits include:
- Relevance & Quality Assessment – AI evaluates student replies for alignment with the discussion topic and assesses the quality of each contribution.
- Instructor Dashboard – Displays an overview of each reply with labels: Relevant, Irrelevant, or Needs Review, along with evaluation notes.
Enablement
In order to test it, you will need to enable the feature in your corse:
- Open your Canvas instance in beta or production (depending which environment your institution is agreed to do the testing)
- Courses → Settings → Feature Options
- Enable the following flags:
- Discussion Insights
How Discussion Insights Works
- Courses → Discussions
- Select a discussion which has replies from students (teacher replies will not be sufficient)
- On the Discussion home page, click “Discussion Insights”
- Discussion Insight dashboard will show all students who responded to the discussion and their relevance to the post as well as the reasoning behind the evaluation notes as indicated in ‘Evaluation notes’
Tips:
- Teachers can view the discussion post and the evaluation notes by clicking on ‘See Reply’ button
- Teachers can provide thumbs-up/thumbs-down as feedback to let us know that the Evaluation notes were accurate or not. Additional comments will be helpful as we perfect the relevance.
- Teachers can also go to the post by clicking ’see reply in context’.
