Support CSV Import for Tag Creation in Large Courses

Problem statement:

In large courses, creating Tags manually is time-consuming and impractical. Most instructors don’t have the technical expertise to use APIs, and selecting dozens of students repeatedly through the UI isn’t scalable.

Proposed solution:

Allow instructors to create and assign Tags via CSV import. This would streamline the setup process, especially in courses with many students or multiple sections.

I'm interested in this feature, it would be very useful to us. But have a concern about implementation. The worry that immediately popped into mind - where would the option to add tags via CSV import be place? what permissions will be needed? We don't use the +People button in the roster area - most users are added via our custom SIS integration, and we have an off-shoot of that for manual course enrollments. Being able to create tags and add them to users would need to be a set ofpermission separate from doing anything with enrollments.

Hi @rake_9,

What we've been thinking is that a CSV upload option would be either in the Manage Tags tray or in the create modal. This would be similar to how it works for Groups today where it's separate from changing the enrollments on the People page. There is also already a separate permission for Tags, that's only on for teachers by default. There are granular permissions as well for add/edit/delete. Let me know what you think!

I wonder if there's a way to do something like the gradebook export/import process. A CSV file with a list of each student with column headers for the various tags could be exported, and then instructors could change the status for each student for each tag on that file and then import it to update Canvas. This would also allow instructors working with lots of tags and/or a large class to have an easier way to view everything at once.

As with assignments and an exported gradebook, I would expect that new tags have to be created within the browser (or via API) and not by editing the CSV file.

I like @ProfessorBeyrer 's suggestion about have the option to export existing tags as a sort of upload file worksheet.

Personally, I would expect to see an import option on the Manage interface rather than the Create interface.

I'm new (still waiting to get this feature enabled on our subaccount yet) but we would definitely want a simple bulk upload. We have courses that have 600+ students where we would want to be able to use tags.

I was hoping for an upload feature similar to the import groups option from a csv which is pretty straight forward and simple enough I'm comfortable letting faculty do this on their own after showing them it once.

You can go to a tag (or tag set) and upload either a list of students by ID or a list of students by ID and tag (similar to a group)

We currently use subsections to give us some of the functionality that tags promises but subsections are unwieldy to manage, and not able to be done well from the instructor side as managing section enrollment isn't practical for large numbers of students.

In many cases we make subsections to match groupsets so the assign-to and communication can be used for the groups. I'm really hoping tags will be able to replace all this functionality and make management much easier from the instructor side so they don't need intervention from support to manage the subsections.

Similar to Enhanced Rubrics, can there be a button that pulls the student's canvas_user_id along with the template so it's easier for teachers to create these tags? Most teachers aren't similar with user_ids and would have to export their gradebook to get these IDs which is not faster than creating and assigning tags right from the People Screen.

Also currently, the Import Tags tray says "You can create tags by downloading the differentiation tag template” but there is no template. diff vs rubrics.png
