Hi Tilda, I don't know your specific LUOA organization. But if your Canvas admin has requested it, then there is a live Chat tool available directly in Canvas called Canvas Chat. Bascially it would provide you with live chat board for the whole class to join and participate in. There are several limitations, so you will want to read up on it.
While not perfect, you could consider creating small group chats using the Canvas Groups and leverage the Discussion boards for the smaller groups to chat with each other. This would be more like asynchronous and not live as it sounds like you are looking for.
