It's not really e-mail ... as you cannot send/receive messages via Canvas to/from your friends/family because they are most likely not enrolled in the same classes that you are. You can only send/receive messages from others who are enrolled in the same classes that you are. All that being said, yes, you can use the Canvas Inbox. Here is a video tutorial for you to watch:
