Can my plugin appear in the 'Root' navigation bar of Canvas?

I'm developing a plugin that will need to show a notification status for Students in order for them to know when to interact with it. Is it possible for my plugin to be made available as an icon in the root left most menu bar of Canvas alongside options like the inbox and calendar?
