Step 1: Export your course
Start with a course export. This provides an IMSCC file (a Common Cartridge package) that includes course settings, syllabus body, modules, assignments, quizzes, question banks, discussion topics, pages, announcements, rubrics, files, and calendar events.
You can also export a course as an HTML file. In the HTML file, you can view assignment details, availability dates, and point values. Discussions and quizzes only include the description.
Note(s):
- The course export does not include student submissions, gradebook records, discussion comments, active user enrollments, or LTI tool configurations for external apps such as Google Drive and Microsoft Office 365.
- Canvas does not support course exports over 20 GB. If your course is large, manually download some files and delete them to reduce the size of the course.
Step 2: Export grades and student work
Next, download grades and student submissions.
If you’d like to save quizzes independently from course content, additional exports are needed. With Classic Quizzes, start with the quiz content export for the whole course, then work through the additional reports if they apply. Reports need to be generated for each quiz.
With New Quizzes, each quiz and report must be exported individually.
Note: A bulk export option is not available for discussion replies. If discussion content needs to be preserved, printing threads to PDF is the best option.
Step 3: Move your course
After downloading course content:
- Move to Canvas
- Move to Canvas Career
- Move to another platform
- The IMSCC format follows the Common Cartridge standard, which most major LMS platforms support. Check your destination platform's documentation for import instructions.
- You can preview your export file before importing using the Common Cartridge Viewer.
