If your institution uses the Studio LTI in Canvas LMS, Studio media may be embedded as part of a Canvas course page or group content via the Rich Content Editor. The Studio media player includes a variety of options you can use to customize your viewing experience.
Depending on the settings, embedded media may include the comments feature.
Notes:
- If the user interface displays differently, the RCE Studio Embed Improvements feature may not be enabled at your institution.
- The Studio Media Player supports keyboard shortcuts. For more information, visit the Studio Media Player Keyboard Shortcuts document.
Open Media
Open the Canvas feature area that displays the media you want to view.
Depending on the options selected by the uploader, the media may display any of the following views:
- Thumbnail View is a compact preview that expands into a full-screen immersive view when clicked [1].
- Learn View is built for focused study. This view supports playback directly on the page with a synchronized, rolling transcript [2].
- Collab View includes everything in Learn View, plus a comment section [3].
- Quiz View turns the video into an assessment. Refer to our guide on taking a Studio video quiz in a Canvas course using RCE Studio Embed Improvements [4].
Notes:
- If the Details and Transcript tabs do not display, this has been turned off by the uploader.
- Only instructors can embed Studio video quizzes.
Expand Thumbnail View
The Thumbnail View displays a compact preview of the Studio Media. To expand it into a full-screen immersive view, click anywhere in the media thumbnail [1].
To exit the view, click the Go Back to Course button [2].
The Details tab [1] displays the media title [2].
To play the video or audio file, click the Play button [1]. You can also view the total length of the media in the timeline [2].
Any annotations appear in the media timeline [3].
If enabled by the uploader, in the Transcript tab, the corresponding caption line is highlighted to match the media timeline during playback [4]. To download the transcript, click the Options icon [5] and click the Download Transcript link [6].
To hide the Details and Transcript tabs, click the Collapse icon [7].
Note: If the Download Transcript option does not display, this feature has been turned off by the uploader.
Set Volume
To set the playback volume for the media, hover over the Volume icon [1] then click and drag the volume indicator [2]. To decrease the volume, move the indicator to the left. To increase the volume, move the indicator to the right.
Note: Playback volume is based on the current volume set for your computer. You may also have to adjust the volume for your computer output.
Set Playback Speed
To set the playback speed of the media, click the Media Settings icon [1]. Then, click the Playback Speed link [2].
By default, the media plays at the set original speed (1x). You can slow the media playback (0.5x or 0.75x) or increase the playback speed (1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x). To manage the playback speed, select an option [3].
Note: If the Playback Speed link is grayed out, the uploader has locked the playback speed at 1x.
Change Video Quality
Video quality automatically adjusts based on available bandwidth. To change the video quality, click the Media Settings icon [1]. Then, click the Quality link [2].
Select your preferred video quality [3].
View Full Screen
To view the video in full screen, click the Full Screen icon.
Note: Not all media uploads include a full screen option.
Turn Captions On or Off
If the media file includes a caption transcript, in the media player, you can turn captions on.
To enable captions for the media, click the Closed Captions icon [1]. To turn it off, click the Closed Captions icon again [2].
View Captions
When closed captioning is enabled, you can view the text as the video plays.
Change Caption Settings
To change the caption settings, click on the Media Settings icon [1], then select the Captions link [2].
To change the caption language settings, select the Language link [3] , then select an available language option.
To change the caption size settings, select the Font Size link [4], then select an available size option.
To change the caption placement settings, click the On Top toggle on [5]. When this setting is turned on, captions display at the top of the media player window. When this setting is turned off, captions display at the bottom of the media player window.
To invert the caption color, click the Invert Colors toggle on [6]. When this setting is turned on, captions display as dark text on a light background. When this setting is turned off, captions display as light text on a dark background.
Click the Media Options icon [1].
To expand the media into a full-screen immersive view, click the Expand View link [2].
To view the Studio media player keyboard shortcuts, click the Keyboard Shortcuts link [3].
To download the media, click the Download Media link [4].
Note: If the Download Media link does not appear, this option has been turned off by the uploader.
If enabled by the uploader, the Comments section displays [1].
Timeline dots indicate comments added by a user [2]. Comments are arranged chronologically by time and are highlighted [3] as they appear in the media timeline.
Comments can also include replies from other users [4]. Studio displays the first five replies. If a comment includes more than five replies, you can load additional replies.
You can add a comment in the Add a comment field [5]. To receive a notification when someone replies to your comment, click the Notify me of replies checkbox [6].
To reply to a comment, click the Reply link [7].
