In Canvas, you can embed media from Studio in any feature area that supports the Rich Content Editor, such as Assignments, Discussions, and Pages. You can select existing media or upload new media through the Studio LTI tool.
When the RCE Studio Embed Improvements feature is enabled, you can select any of the following views: Thumbnail, Learn, Collab, and Quiz (if applicable).
Regardless of comments, embedded media views are always included in analytics.
If needed, you can embed YouTube or Vimeo videos at a particular timestamp. When embedding media in Canvas, the download option is turned off by default for media you own, but you can enable the download option.
Embedding Media in Assignments and Discussions
If you are an instructor and embedding media in an assignment or a discussion, consider using the Thumbnail or Learn view to disable comments. For graded assignments, inline comments are not a replacement for submissions and never display in SpeedGrader. For example, when you embed media in a graded discussion, students can post inline comments. But to receive a grade, they must also post a reply to the graded discussion. The discussion reply appears in SpeedGrader. You can enable comments when embedding media in a No Submission or Not Graded assignment.
Embedding Media as a Student
If you are a student, you can embed Studio media in a discussion reply, a text entry assignment, or a file upload assignment. Media you embed into a Canvas course or group is created as a new copy owned by your instructor. When embedding media, you cannot edit any details. Confirm the name of your media before uploading. Otherwise, contact your instructor to modify the media details.

Open Studio in Rich Content Editor
Open any Canvas feature area that supports the Rich Content Editor, such as Discussions, Assignments, or Pages. Click the Studio icon [1]. Alternatively, you can click the App icon [2].
If the Studio icon does not display in the toolbar, click the Options icon [3].
To search for a video or audio file, click the Search button [1].
To filter results, click the Filter button [2].
To sort by created date or name, click the Sort button [3].
To show collections only, click the Show Collectionsonly checkbox [4].
To view accessibility options within Studio, click the Accessibility icon [5].
To upload new media, click the Create drop-down menu [1].
If you are using Chrome or Edge browsers:
If you are using Safari or Firefox browsers:
To add a media file from your computer, or from YouTube or Vimeo, click the Add Media link [6].
To select the media, click the media thumbnail.
Select one of the following views:
- Thumbnail View [1]: A compact preview that expands into a full-screen Immersive View when clicked. Use this to save space or when the video does not need to be played directly on the Course page.
- Learn View [2]: Built for focused study. Supports playback directly on the page with a synchronized, rolling transcript.
- Collab View [3]: Everything in Learn View, plus a comment section. Best for encouraging peer discussion and feedback alongside the video.
- Quiz View (if available) [4]: Turns the video into an assessment. You can embed specific quizzes and limit playback controls to ensure academic integrity.
Notes:
- The Quiz View displays only if the media includes a quiz.
- Only instructors can embed Studio video quizzes.
Set Viewer Restrictions
You can control how students interact with the media by managing playback behavior and security settings.
If you selected Thumbnail, Learn, or Collab views, you can:
- Lock speed at 1x [1]
- Allow media download (except YouTube or Vimeo videos) [2]
- Allow transcript download [3]
- Show rolling transcript [4]

When embedding media from Vimeo or YouTube, you can use timestamp-based embedding. To select the timestamp where the beginning of pertinent content is highlighted on playback, enter it in the Start embedded media at field [1].
Alternatively, you can locate a start time in the media player. To begin playback, click the Start button [2] or click and drag the time stamp indicator [3]. When the media reaches the desired start point, stop the playback and click the Set Current button [4].
To reset and set a new start time, click the Reset button [5].
Note: Discussions created directly in a group do not include the embed options for Studio media and do not track viewership data. To view the embed options and viewership data when creating a discussion for a course group, the discussion must be created on the course level then set as a group discussion.
Click the Embed Media button.
If you selected the Thumbnail View, the media thumbnail displays [1].
For Learn and Collab views, you can preview your embedded video in the Rich Content Editor field by clicking the Play button [2].

To display the Studio Media Options pop-up, click in the video window.
You can switch between embed views [1]. To open the Media Options panel, click the Options link [2]. To delete the media, click the Remove link [3].
The Studio Media Options tray displays information about the media, including the media title, display and sizing options, and viewer restrictions.
You can customize how the embedded media displays. To embed the video directly in the rich content editor, click the Embed Video radio button [1]. To display a text link to open the media in a new tab, click the Display Text Link (Opens in a new tab) radio button [2].
You can also set viewer restrictions [3].
For Thumbnail and Learn Views, you can adjust the Studio Player layout and size to Small, Medium, Large, or Custom [4].
To save the selected options, click the Done button [5].
Notes:
- You cannot edit the media title from the Studio Media Options tray. To edit the media title, view the media details in Studio.
- The Allow media download toggle does not display for YouTube or Vimeo media.
Save Changes
To publish the Canvas course content that contains the embedded media, click the Save & Publish button [1]. To save the media as a draft, click the Save button [2].
Thumbnail View
The Thumbnail View displays a compact preview of the Studio Media. To expand it into a full-screen Immersive view, click anywhere in the media thumbnail [1].
If available, captions display in the Transcript tab [2]. To download the transcript, click the Options icon [3], then click the Download Transcript link [4].
You can also view the caption files in the Captions tab [5]. To add captions, click the Add New Caption button [6].
To view or edit media details, click the Details tab [7].
To exit the view, click the Go Back to Course button [8].

- When the Allow Transcript Download setting is enabled, the Download Transcript option can be accessed from the player menu or the transcript panel, even if the Show Rolling Transcript setting is disabled.
- The Details and Transcript tabs display only if the Show Rolling Transcript is enabled.
- Students can edit media details and manage captions directly in Studio.
Learn View
To play the media, click the Play button [1].
If available, captions display in the Transcript tab [2]. To manage captions, click the Options icon [3]. You can edit [4] or download the transcript [5].
YouTube or Vimeo videos display a warning message [6]. You can add captions by clicking the Upload or create link [7].
If captions are not available, you can add captions by clicking the Manage captions button [8].
To view or edit media details, click the Details tab [9].

The Collab View displays everything in Learn View, plus a comment section.
To play the media, click the Play button [1].
To add a comment, use the Add a comment field [2]. To receive a notification when someone adds a comment, click the Subscribe to comments toggle on [3].
If available, captions display in the Transcript tab [4]. To manage captions, click the Options icon [5]. You can edit [6] or download the transcript [7].
YouTube or Vimeo videos display a warning message [8]. You can add captions by clicking the Upload or create link [9].
If captions are not available, you can add captions by clicking the Manage captions button [10].
To view or edit media details, click the Details tab [11].
