Requirements define the actions a learner must complete in order to progress through a pathway. Issuers can add requirements to a pathway step based on Canvas courses, Canvas assignments, earned credentials, or manual experiences.
Canvas assignment requirements allow pathway progress to reflect a learners graded submission for a specific assignment. Progress is based on the learners most recent graded submission in Canvas. This lesson explains how to add a requirement to a pathway step and configure the requirement settings.
Notes:
- To use Canvas assignments and Canvas Modules as pathway requirements, there must be at least one active Canvas Credentials LTI connection.
- Letter Grade and GPA grading models are not supported.
- Supported grading types include Points, Percentage, and Completion.
- Assignment grading settings are imported from Canvas and cannot be edited in Pathways.
Open Pathways
Click the Pathways tab [1], then click the Create pathway button [2].
Add Step
Click the Add Step button. You will be prompted to add the Step name.
Click the Add Requirement button.
Select Requirement Type
Click the Requirement Type drop-down menu [1]. To add an assignment requirement, select the Canvas Assignment option [2].
You can also add other requirement types, including Canvas Course, Earned Credential, and Manual Requirement Experience.
Select Assignment
Locate the assignment you want to add as the requirement.
Enter a course name in the Search field [1] to display matching results. Click a course from the results list [2], then click the Next button [3].
Set Assignment Threshold
Set the requirement threshold based on the assignments Canvas grading type [1]. Optionally, you can define a trigger date [2].
If the assignment is points-based, enter the minimum number of points required to meet the requirement.
If the assignment is percentage-based, enter the minimum percentage required.
If the assignment is completion-based, no numeric threshold is required.
Then click the Add Requirement button.
Add Canvas Course
When adding a Canvas Course requirement, the system checks whether Canvas access is enabled for the organization.
If the organization setting is disabled, a message displays instructing issuers to contact their organization administrator to grant access.
If Canvas access is enabled, you can proceed to select a course requirement.
Depending on configuration, select an instance and/or account [1]. To locate a course requirement, filter by Course Name or ID [2], Teacher Name [3], or Term [4]. Issuers can also browse available courses [5], each displaying its name, sub-account, and term. To open the course in Canvas, click the View Details link [6].
Add Earned Credential Requirement
To add an Earned Credential requirement, click the Select badge(s) button or the Add Third-party Badge button. Once a badge is selected, click the Add Requirement button [2].
Add Canvas Module Requirement
To add a Canvas Module as a requirement, click the Requirement Type drop down menu [1]. Then, select the Canvas Module option [2].
Note: To use Canvas modules as pathway requirements, at least one active Canvas Credentials LTI connection is required.
Add Manual Requirement
To add a manual requirement to the pathway step, click the Requirement Type drop-down menu [1] and select the Manual Requirement Experience option [2].
Open Learn More
Once a requirement is added, click the Learn more link [1]. A message explaining how the system determines whether to reuse an existing group or create a new one displays [2].
A group is reused only when it matches:
- The same Canvas course
- The same Canvas environment
- The same issuer as the pathway
If no matching group exists within the same issuer, a new group is created automatically.
Remove Requirement
To remove a requirement, click the Delete icon.
A message displays explaining that the linked group will be unsubscribed from the pathway [1]. To continue, click the Remove Requirement button [2]. To save the changes, publish the pathway.
If the group was created specifically for Pathways and has no remaining dependencies, it can also be deleted. Click the Also delete the group entirely checkbox [1], then click the Remove Requirement button [2].
