Old Canvas Community Link Replacements
Hello All, As a part of the recent migration to the new Canvas Community a number of previously redirected links no longer are functioning. Due to this we needed to start a process to find and replace these links in our course. Our choice in method to do this was to use a combination of Tableau and Canvas Data in…

Mark a course module Completed for a specific User through Canvas API
We need to mark course modules as Completed in a Canvas Course through the Canvas API. In an external service, we will decide which modules a user does not need to consume, and we want to mark those modules 'Completed' in Canvas for that user. The user will see All the available modules, but needs to prioritize their time…
How can I use the Canvas API to force rubric criterion results to display in a certain order across the traditional view, when they all have the same number of points?
I have some validation that I want to set up when using rubrics to score a non-submission assignment that involves having equally weighted results in some rubric criterion. I am using the Canvas API to build these, and I can't find a way to force them to be presented in anything other than alphabetical order (based on…
Canvas Link Attributes
Hello - I'm playing around with programmatically creating Pages through the API, and I have a question about the various attributes that Canvas adds to the links when using the WYSIWYG editor. For example, here is a link to a Page: <p><a title="PAGE_TITLE" href="/courses/COURSE_ID/pages/PAGE_URL"…
How do I associate an outcome with a rubric via the API
Hi all, I have successfully managed to add Outcomes to a Canvas course. Yay. Now the boss wants me to add an outcome to a rubric via a script, so using the API. I have looked at the outcomes endpoints and at the rubrics endpoints. In outcomes, there is link an outcome, but that seems to be have nothing to do with rubrics.…
Cannot set users' avatar URL
I'm trying to change avatar for users using the Edit User API endpoint with the "user[avatar][url]" parameter. The users' avatars on the Canvas site don't change, and the results from the List Avatar Options don't change either. I'm able to use the Edit User endpoint to change other properties of the user (I tested out…
Legacy 1.1 LTI Tool - Trying to do something basic
I know that I will need to learn LTI 1.3, but our main Canvas administrator is out for the month and so I'm trying to see what I can do while they are absent. The following link has some information about LTI 1.1: https://developerdocs.instructure.com/services/canvas/external-tools/lti/file.tools_xml By posting an XML file…
How do I upload a csv file via the API?
Hi everyone, I am using the LIVE API and checking out the endpoint /v1/accounts/{account_id}/rubrics/upload Creates a rubric using a CSV file and the only parameter it asks for is the account_id. There are no instructions for uploading a csv file or even an example of how that would work using the Live API. I did find the…
Resources for LTI/App Development?
I was looking into trying to understand how to create a basic app that interfaces with Canvas. I was optimistic when I came across this post from 2023: While the answer included a link to a cookiecutter LTI setup, that still seems quite far from some sort of basic Hello-World or tutorial. Relevant Background: I have…
Bulk Reviewing Canvas Link Validator Results Across Courses with Tampermonkey
Hello, I wanted to share a browser-based Canvas userscript I built for reviewing Canvas Link Validator results across multiple Canvas courses. The Problem Canvas already has a built-in Link Validator, but reviewing broken links across many courses can still take a lot of time. A course may contain invalid links for many…
Bulk Find/Replace Across Canvas Courses with Tampermonkey
Hello, I wanted to share a browser-based Canvas userscript I built for bulk searching, reviewing, and optionally replacing repeated content across multiple Canvas courses. The Problem When terminology, links, instructions, policy language, department names, or other repeated text changes, finding every occurrence across…
