Multiple Grade Schemes in one Course

I have a teacher who has 5 sections of Health. Out of all her students, 11 need to be graded pass/fail, while the rest do not. I have shown her how to grade assignments by grade scale for those 11 students, but cannot find a way to have their final grade show as P/F while everyone else gets the A-F type grade.

Any ideas?

Hi there @cheri_masters ,

I'm pretty sure Canvas only allows you to select one grade scheme for each course.

I'm not too much of an expert in this part of Canvas (with using grading schemes), however would it be possible to potentially make a new course with the grading scheme you need for those 11 students specifically while carrying over the assignments they need to do (which could be accomplished via a course copy or assignment and quiz imports)?

Thanks for replying.

I wish we could. Courses are created by PowerSchool, and we would need to make a special Health course for just a few students, which never goes over well with those in charge. We used to create manual courses for the few and then crosslist them together, but this is no longer an option.

I was pretty sure it was one scheme per course, but you never know until you ask.

I'd be interested in this too since we have cross-listed courses where this can happen as well (the need for mixed grading schemas).

To my knowledge, Canvas does not have a solution for this. We regularly run into similar issues with cross-listed courses that have different requirements.

Our solution is usually to educate students that faculty have limited control over the Canvas gradebook and that it is frequently incorrect as a result.

Hi @cheri_masters,

I think I have an option you can use. Have you considered this:

create a Pass/Fail grading scheme (whether at the course level or account level, you may have already done this)
create an assignment for all of the students (you will need to excuse the 11 students from it, https://community.instructure.com/en/kb/articles/660848-how-do-i-change-the-status-of-a-submission-in-the-gradebook%29 ) and use whatever grading configuration you usually use for it
create a separate assignment for the 11 students that need the P/F grading scheme and assign it to only them those 11 students
configure the assignment so that its "Display Grade as" is set to "Letter Grade" ( https://community.instructure.com/en/kb/articles/660691-how-do-i-add-a-grading-scheme-to-an-assignment ) and then select the P/F grading scheme

Outcome rating descriptions
I am just curiousas to why there is not a field to enter a description for an outcome at the account level? Or at least edit the rating when you attach/link an account level outcome to a rubric.
