Our institution is setting up 9 institutional outcomes in Canvas. Several of our outcomes have multiple skill sets within the rubric. For example:
- Critical Reading – Skill Set A
- Critical Reading – Skill Set B
- Critical Reading – Skill Set C
Our understanding is that Canvas Outcomes data reports can provide the overall/total result from the rubric, but that the underlying data for Skill Sets A, B, and C is not available as separate outcome-level data unless each skill set is established as its own Canvas Outcome.
If that is correct, we would potentially go from 9 institutional outcomes to close to 30 outcomes simply so we can report on the individual skill sets.
Questions for the Community:
- Is creating separate outcomes for Skill Set A, B, and C the only way to obtain/report separate outcome data for each skill set?
- Is there another way to structure the outcomes/rubrics so that we can retain our 9 institutional outcomes while still being able to report on the individual skill sets?
- For institutions that have created separate outcomes for each skill set, what challenges or limitations have you experienced?
- What issues should we anticipate if faculty are expected to connect all of these outcomes to assignments, quizzes, discussions, etc.?
- Does connecting a large number of outcomes to assignments create issues with:
- Faculty workflow/usability
- SpeedGrader
- Rubric setup
- Outcome reporting
- Student visibility
- Course-level outcome reports
- Institutional reporting/data analysis
- Is there a recommended Canvas outcome structure for an institution that wants to report both the overall institutional outcome and the individual skill-set results?
We are trying to make this decision before we have faculty begin adding outcomes throughout their courses, so I would especially appreciate feedback from institutions that have implemented something similar.
