Matching Question in Item Bank - New Quiz Format

When a matching question is added to an item bank, there appears to be no way assign it default point. For example, adding matching type question with 5 questions to match. There is no way to weight that question as being worth 5 points. This is true whether working on the question in an item bank, or directly in a quiz.

The only workaround for this that I have found is to add the matching question directly to the quiz. When doing that I am able to assign points other than 1 point. However, this defeats the purpose of an item bank as a central repository of questions.

Am I doing something wrong here? Or, is this the default behavior.

Hi @RubenFonseca,

Whether you are using all of the questions (which you have selected) or randomly selecting questions from an entire item bank, on an individual question basis you cannot select the amount of points each question is worth. You have to set how many points all of the questions are worth and it will be the same amount.

On the other hand, if you are (on your own) selecting individual questions from a bank, you are able to set the amount of points each question is worth.

You are correct about this, though it's not limited to Matching Questions. Items/Questions in banks have no inherent point value. The point value is assigned when the question is added to a quiz (whether individually or randomly drawn). This allows banked questions to be worht different point values in different courses or on different quizzes.

Thanks for replying. I understand that the point value is can't be assigned in Item Banks. However, when I add that question (matching) from an item bank to a quiz, I am still unable to alter its point value at the quiz level. The only workaround in this case when I want an individual question to be worth more than one point, is to add a question at the quiz level outside of the item bank. Using questions from an item bank doesn't allow changing the point value at the quiz level. If you can spare a minute, can you verify this by trying to add a question from an item bank to a quiz and then trying alter that question point value?

I just tried this out to make sure everything was working as expected. I created a matching question in a bank, then made a new quiz and added the question from the bank. I was able to change the point value for the question in the quiz (at the bottom of the question). Are you still experiencing the issue?

Still unable to set point values separately for item banks in a quiz. This is the only place I can see to set point value. However it is a global setting.

Thank you for the clarification. This works. I have marked your response as the accepted answer.

It will still be not possible to use the matching question format. If I have a 100-question bank with 2 matching questions (worth more than one point), then I would have to individually select the 2 matching questions, assign their point-values, then load the bank again and individually select the other 98 questions. On its face, the is counterintuitive and excessively complicated. Seems like a bug instead of a feature.

Hi @RubenFonseca,

When you are drawing from banks, it's really best to make separate banks based on the point value you'll want. For example, you can have a "Unit 1 - 1pt" bank with 98 matching questions in it, and a "Unit 1 - 2pt" bank with 2 matching questions. When you create the quit, you can configure the 1pt bank draw to be worth 1pt, and the 2pt bank draw to be 2 points. It may seem slightly counterintuitive at first, but I think it's the simplest way to do things.
