Inherited Developer Key "Athena - 2026-04-30", Anyone else seeing this?

I found an inherited Developer Key in my Canvas instance titled "Athena - 2026-04-30 22:22:18 UTC."

Mine is currently off. I haven't been able to find a release note or Community announcement for it.

Are you seeing this key in your instance, and what state is it in?

Does anyone know the intended default state, or where changes to it get announced? I'd also be interested in whether anyone knows how long Athena's Canvas integration has been available to students, since this title makes reference to a connection to Canvas well before this key's date.

Hi Chris,

That developer key belongs to Athena, an Instructure Foundry product. To learn more about the AI learning companion you can visit Athena's webpage.

The key lets students at your institution authorize a connection between their Athena accounts and Canvas. The connection is read-only and scoped to student permissions, so it only surfaces what a student can already see in their own courses.

I have a few answers that the Foundry team provided:

Default state: off. It has to be turned on before students can authorize the connection, so your instance being off is expected.
The time in the title is a timestamp from when the key was first created for early testing. It doesn't reflect a rollout date or the intended default state.
Opt-in is currently available at the root level only. Future Canvas releases will add the ability to enable it at the sub-account and course levels too.

Thanks for the information, @Kristin Lundstrum. I recall seeing information about the title of this Athena developer key (Athena 2026-04-30…) as the date of issuance for the developer key. I'm seeing a large quantity of developer keys in my Canvas instance contain "2026-04-30" in the titles. Was there some documented activity by Instructure in deploying numerous developer keys, off by default, into our Canvas production environments? I'm not seeing anything related to this in April 2026 Deploy Notes or Release Notes.

Also, is it possible to rename Developer Key titles to remove the issuance date?
