Effective feedback during observations should be prioritized, specific, actionable, supportive, and provided as soon as possible after the observation. As a principal, I can strengthen my feedback by focusing on the instructional practice that will have the greatest impact on student learning rather than overwhelming teachers with multiple areas for improvement. Feedback should be grounded in specific evidence from the classroom, identify a clear strength, and provide one manageable next step that the teacher can immediately apply to instruction. I can also use feedback conversations to encourage reflection, celebrate growth, and collaborate with teachers on strategies that support student engagement and achievement.
