Implementing structural changes without disrupting your institution requires a deliberate change management strategy. Here is how to execute your next configuration update—and plan for unforeseen disruptions—smoothly.
1. Bring Leaders Together and Map the Impact
Before you flip a single switch, form an adoption team to assess your current processes and define a shared vision.
- Document your current setting values to create a rollback reference.
- Determine exactly which audiences will be impacted by the change.
- Always test your configuration changes in a low-risk sub-account or sandbox before rolling them out account-wide.
2. Build Communication and Training Plans
Your communication plan raises awareness and fosters the desire for change. To keep trust high:
- Give instructors at least two weeks' notice before implementing changes that affect their course setup or grading workflows.
- Notify learners directly via a Canvas Announcement or email when changes affect their daily experience.
- Update your internal help documentation before new settings go live.
3. Plan for the Unexpected: Incident Response
