Former FFT educator hoping for an update

I'm a 27-year veteran high school science teacher who has used Canvas for 15+ years. I've preserved my courses and have been waiting for the new individual educator solution.
I understand that Instructure has said it is working on a more secure solution and that it is expected this fall. However, I now need to decide whether to purchase managed Canvas hosting at my own expense for the school year.
Is there any additional information Instructure can share about the anticipated timeline, beta/early access, or whether former FFT educators will be able to import their existing .imscc courses?
I really want to stay with Canvas. I just need to know whether I should keep waiting.

I gave up and moved to Moodle. Gotta say, it was not an easy move. But I couldn't wait. I was able to import my imscc from Canvas, so I did preserve my quiz banks, but integrating with my textbook has been difficult. Just got it to work today, after working with the publisher for a month. Crazy times,

Considering most institutions have started or soon to start the coming year, I'd expect an announcement to be coming soon. I know it is frustrating to wait as our district has removed Canvas below 9th grade so some of us at my building are waiting too. I believe they are aiming to release something this Fall and am certain the product engineers are taking great care to ensure that what they release helps plug the holes and make it more secure. Tidbits of information on here suggest some new features over the older FFT as well.

I believe they will work to include the ability to import .imscc files. It would not make sense to leave that out.

I am not sure if they allow individuals to purchase instances, but if you find out otherwise, please let us know.

@TerrianneLavin We could not wait any longer either, and went with an Open Canvas LMS hosting option, on a month-by-month basis. I have the technical know-how to do that, but many others don't.

@JeffCampbell We're hoping to see movement on a new offering from Instructure, but I honestly don't expect it after talking to the company people at InstructureCon in late July. We did talk with Instructure about an individual purchased license option, but it is too expensive to consider for most individuals. We even thought about pooling together resources, and have about 6 of us work together, but even that was not cost effective as individual teachers.

I also think it is going to be several more months before we see anything that takes the place of FFT. Instructure left a lot of FFT educators hanging, and waisted a lot of goodwill that they build over the years.

An understandable solution. I know you feel that this left a lot of teachers hanging. Launching any kind of project takes time. Yes, they can build and enhance what they had, saving time over starting completely from scratch. But this was an unexpected occurrence at an unfortunate time of the year. I would hope that they get something out soon, but considering student privacy, I'd hope that the delay is ensuring it is working and secure rather than just working.

Best wishes that the option your team went with will fulfill your needs for now. I also hope that when Canvas does get the replacement working, you are still open to giving it a fair shake. Maybe even using this other option might allow you to spot ways they can improve the new FFT further.

Hi! Big news today: Instructure just announced Canvas Lite. It's a free, simple way for individual educators to build and deliver course content to their learners, no institution or full Canvas license required.

Canvas Lite launches on September 30. There's also a final access window running September 30 through October 6, so mark your calendars. Zach Pendleton wrote up all the details in the FFT Users Blog! It’s worth a read if you want the full picture.
