Summary
Canvas-based pathway requirements use recipient groups as the operational layer connecting Canvas enrollment with pathway participation and progress.
- Group creation, reuse, protection, and cleanup for Canvas course requirements operate with increased predictability and transparency.
- Groups supporting Canvas course requirements scope directly to the issuer that owns the pathway.
- System indicators clearly identify groups created or required by pathways and prevent required groups from being deleted while active.
- The pathway progress experience introduces Enrollment Gaps to identify missing course enrollments and All Groups to present an aggregate view across subscribed populations.

Feature Workflow
Add Canvas Requirement
In the Pathway Editor, select the Canvas Course, Canvas Module, or Canvas Assignment requirement type.
View Group Creation and Reuse Conditions
Once a requirement is added, click the Learn more link [1]. A message explaining how the system determines whether to reuse an existing group or create a new one displays [2].
A group is reused only when it matches:
- The same Canvas course
- The same Canvas environment
- The same issuer as the pathway
If no matching group exists within the same issuer, a new group is created automatically.
Click the Add Requirement button [3].
Notes:
- This allows administrators to distinguish system-created groups from manually managed groups and understand which pathway depends on a group.
- Groups are not reused across issuers, even when two issuers reference the same Canvas course.
- This issuer boundary ensures that each pathway operates within the group structure of the issuer that owns it.
Remove Canvas Requirement
To remove a Canvas requirement, click the Delete icon [1]. A message displays explaining that the linked group will be unsubscribed from the pathway [2]. To continue, click the Remove Requirement button [3]. To save the changes, publish the pathway.
Depending on how the group is used:
- If another pathway still requires the group, it is retained.
- If the group is no longer required by the pathway, it is unsubscribed.
- If the group was created specifically for Pathways and has no remaining dependencies, it can also be deleted by clicking the Also delete the group entirely checkbox.
To view the groups for the pathway, open the Group Progress tab [1]. Groups created in a pathway display an indicator in the Creation method column [2]. Hover over the Information icon to view the tooltip message explaining why the group exists [3].
View Issuer Groups
To view all groups for the issuer, open the Groups tab [1].
Depending on the group, issuers may see the following:
- A Creation method indicating whether the group was created manually, by a Pathway, through Canvas, or an API [2].
- A Course requirement indicator when the group is required by a Canvas course requirement [3].
- A link to the related pathway when applicable [4].
If an issuer tries to delete the group, a message displays. To delete the group, an issuer must first remove the requirement from the pathway.
Review Enrollment Gaps
Not every learner participating in a pathway is necessarily enrolled in every Canvas course required by that pathway. When enrollment gaps exist, issuers can access them from the pathway progress experience.
Enrollment Gaps identifies learners who are missing required Canvas course enrollment.
The Enrollment Gaps view includes:
- Learners participating in the pathway [1]
- Required Canvas courses [2]
- Enrolled and Not enrolled statuses [3]
- Search and sorting [4]
- Views scoped across groups or individual learners
- CSV export option for group-based views [5]
To resolve an enrollment gap, enroll the student in the required Canvas course. Once Canvas enrollment synchronizes, the gap is reevaluated automatically.
Note: Enrollment Gaps are informational only. They do not modify Canvas enrollment.
Monitor All Groups Progress
Navigate to Pathway Progress. When All Groups is selected [1]:
- Progress is aggregated across the complete subscribed population
- Learners from multiple groups display in a combined learner view
- Learners in multiple groups are deduplicated
- Each learner is counted once in aggregate pathway progress
To perform group-specific actions such as bulk evaluations or evaluate experience, select a specific group [2].
Note: The All Groups option is intended primarily for program-level monitoring and diagnosis.
