Question Regarding the Use of New Quizzes in Canvas

Hello,

My name is Priyanka Udayabhanu, and I am the LMS Administrator and Instructional Designer for Medix College (North York, Scarborough, and Brampton campuses).I have a question regarding the use of New Quizzes in Canvas. Currently, we continue to use Classic Quizzes because we previously experienced issues when copying courses that contained New Quizzes. In some cases, the quizzes were not copied accurately, which created challenges for our instructors.That said, we are very interested in transitioning to New Quizzes because of the additional features and benefits they offer to both students and faculty. Before we move forward with implementation and begin training our instructors, I would like to confirm whether there are any known or ongoing issues related to using New Quizzes, particularly with course copying, course imports, or other functionality that we should be aware of.Could you please let me know if these issues have been resolved and whether there are any current limitations or considerations that institutions should be aware of before adopting New Quizzes more broadly?I would also appreciate it if you could share any documentation, implementation guides, best practices, training materials, release notes, or other supporting resources that would help us evaluate and prepare for a successful transition to New Quizzes.Thank you for your time and assistance. We've finally decided to encourage faculty to make the switch after allowing them to use either quiz tool for a few years. Most of the issues we were tracking have been resolved. One that remains is that those with the built-in "Developer" role cannot edit New Quizzes (we last tested this a few weeks ago).

We've added the "Convert content to New Quizzes" checkbox to the import tool and pre-checked it. Converting quizzes during the import process is much easier than migrating them one-by-one in a course.

We are recommending that faculty check each quiz for issues. We're seeing a lot of HTML issues affecting formatting and occasionally functionality in quizzes originally created in Blackboard and migrated to Classic Quizzes when we switched from Blackboard to Canvas. Nearly all of our Classic Quizzes came in from Blackboard, so I can't speak to migration issues outside of that scenario.

Hi @pudayabhanu,

While they have not yet been posted, it is my understanding that every session from InstructureCon 2026 was recorded. One of the sessions was led by @Chris and the session's blog post is at Going "All-In" on New Quizzes: UM-Dearborn's journey to full adoption of New Quizzes and retirement of Classic Quizzes. The blog post also includes a copy of Chris' slides. You can access any of the other session blog posts.

I recommend that you monitor that blog post and/or InstructureCon 2026 in the Community.
