As AI tools become a regular fixture in our students’ lives, the conversation in education has shifted. It’s no longer about if students will use AI, but how. Without explicitly stated boundaries, learners are often left guessing what counts as legitimate assistance versus academic dishonesty.
When we leave AI expectations ambiguous, it inadvertently creates additional stress for both students and educators. By defining clear, assignment-level expectations directly within Canvas, we can reduce accidental misuse, preserve the necessary cognitive struggle of learning, and reduce teacher frustration.
To take the guesswork out of expectations for student AI use, here are two actionable frameworks you can adopt or adapt in your Canvas course today.
Framework 1: Zones for Student AI Use
Best for K-12 environments or building baseline AI literacy.
This intuitive, color-coded system is perfect for younger learners or courses introducing fundamental AI awareness. It categorizes tasks into distinct levels of permission that students can recognize at a glance.
In the red zone, students stop and think while focusing on showing what they know without AI. In the yellow zone, students proceed with using AI cautiously after doing their own thinking to help with getting work started or refining work. In the green zone, students can go forward with using AI responsibly to learn new skills or co-create work.
Framework 2: The AI Progression Scale
Best for secondary education, AP courses, and higher education.
This 5-level scale provides a nuanced progression from total Hhuman construction to AI-driven production, allowing you to match the technology directly to your lesson's specific cognitive goals.
At level one, student submissions are human centered without AI contributions. In level two, students are able to use AI for ideation and clarification to assist with learning like a tutor. The remaining levels require students to disclose AI use with details relevant to their work. In level three, students can use AI for refining and polishing their work that is human-generated and AI-enhanced. In level four, students can use AI for iterative collaboration, ensuring that they include their prompts and validation with their submission. Finally, in level five, students are able to use AI to create outcomes that are not possible without AI, while curating, analyzing, and validating output for uncharted exploration.
Bringing it into Canvas
Establishing a framework helps teachers to be able to focus on evaluating submissions against clear, pre-communicated standards rather than spending time being AI detectives. Here is how to make these guardrails actionable in your Canvas environment:
- Embed directly into the assignment description: Include your AI policy in your Canvas syllabus, and put the assigned AI level or zone color right at the top of every Canvas assignment description or in the assignment rubric. That way, when students click to submit their assignment, the expectations are clearly posted.
- Focus on the why: Explain to students why an assignment is designated a certain color or level. If they understand that a Level 1 (No AI) assignment is designed to build the foundational skills they need for an upcoming timed exam, they are far more likely to respect the boundary. Using approaches like TILT in your assignment directions to include the purpose, task, and criteria can help reinforce the why behind an assignment.
- Provide built-in disclosure templates for students: If an assignment falls into a collaborative tier (like level 3, 4, or the yellow/green zones), include a standard statement of AI use that students can grab right from your assignment instructions, include an AI use question on Canvas quizzes, or include ways for students to mark AI use on annotation assignments. When the expectation demands transparency, the incentive to hide AI use disappears, fostering an environment of trust.
