Can users in a cross-listed course have two different roles in two different sections?

Hello,

I have seen some conflicting answers on whether a user enrolled in two sections can hold a different course role in each section simultaneously. Is this possible in Canvas?

The goal is this:

Course

Section A - User has role of Teacher

Section B - User has role of Student

User can grade users in Section A, but participate as a student in section B

Yes, I believe that what you state is true.  If you have two different roles in the same course (different sections), the "Teacher" role supersedes the "Student" role.  I've found this to be the case as well with my role as a Canvas administrator at the college where I work.  Even though I have assigned my role as a student, for example, I can still access things like the course "Settings" menu on the left-hand course navigation which usually only teachers and admins can access.

Hi Chris,

This is indeed the behavior I am referencing. However, it appears when the user interacts with their course, their role of "Teacher" supersedes their "Student" role, and they are unable to make submissions.

If so, then yes, it's possible to enroll a single user with different roles in different sections of the same course.
