How do you enable a course template at the root account

I have been looking in all the user guide and trying to figure out what setting or steps are necessary in order to turn a course that has been designed into our account template. When I try to select the check box for "use this as account template" it is greyed out and not something I can check. We are in the beginning of our implementation and I can't figure out how to install the template in the root account.

@LeaMitchellatSUSD If you're following these instructions: https://community.instructure.com/en/kb/articles/661456-how-do-i-enable-a-course-as-a-course-template — you'll also need to ensure the Test Student enrollment is deleted out of the course along with any other enrollments shown on the People page. The People page does not show the Test Student enrollment, though.

To delete the Test Student enrollment, I usually go into the Grades page and then click on Test Student, then in the modal, click on Test Student (their name)

Then under Memberships, click on Delete

At this point, the Enable as Course Template box should be able to be checked.

@LeaMitchellatSUSD Are there enrollments in your template course? If there are any enrollments, including the test student, you would not be able to enable the course as a template.

Depending on the roles and permissions at your institution, you might not be able to do what @melodyc_lam described.

If you cannot do that, try the steps from the University of North Carolina Charlotte. I have attached them as a printed PDF file incase the site cannot be accessed.

I've found that if you make a course through the Courses page in an account (which normally does not come with ANY enrollments), and you've never activated Student View, there won't be any enrollments at all (no test student enrollment) or sections.

Student view will still work — it'll make a Test Student enrollment and section for the course. Interesting behavior!

Except for in beta when I might be testing something, all of our courses (real or development or sandbox) are created either through our automated SIS imports or by manual CSV uploads.

When I set up the course templates in our instance the situation that @melodyc_lam described is what I encountered. That step wasn't included in the guide I was following. Once I removed the test student, it worked like a charm. The trick then was remembering my naming conventions for the templates or keeping the course numbers logged somewhere so I could easily find them when I needed to do any modifications or edits prior to the start of another term.
