In March, we had the opportunity to bring together a diverse group of Canvas Career customers for a Customer Discovery Session (CDS) focused on one critical question: what does it really take to get from program idea to live learning?
Participants from global universities, professional associations, and training providers each mapped their journey from concept to learner engagement. While their contexts varied, a shared story quickly emerged.
Here are the top three things we learned and how they’re shaping the future of Canvas Career.
The Path to Learning Activation
Insights
One of the clearest takeaways: activation is not a single step, it’s a journey. Across all participants, we saw a consistent multi-stage lifecycle that begins long before anyone logs into Canvas Career.
The “pre-platform” complexities of aligning stakeholders, regulatory requirements, approval workflows, etc. is largely invisible, but it plays a major role in slowing down time to activation.
Opportunities
There is a strong opportunity to better support customers earlier in their journey and help them move more efficiently from planning to live learning by reducing the friction that exists before course setup even begins.
Content Development & Instructional Design
Insights
Across organizations, instructional designers (IDs) emerged as critical, but stretched. Whether part of a large team or working solo, IDs are often responsible for content creation, tool management, and course setup simultaneously.
At the same time, many teams rely heavily on external tools for authoring and interactivity, leading to fragmented workflows and added complexity.
Opportunities
Improving native authoring, interactivity, and content management capabilities within Canvas Career would reduce reliance on external tools and help streamline the path from content creation to launch.
Migration & Workflow Complexity
Insights
For many organizations, moving into Canvas Career is not a simple migration. It’s a full redesign of how learning programs are built and delivered.
Customers highlighted friction when transitioning from Canvas or external systems, noting that existing workflows, mental models, and content structures don’t translate easily.
Opportunities
There is a clear need for more seamless transitions along with tooling that supports rethinking workflows rather than rebuilding from scratch.
In Closing
Across every conversation, one thing was clear: our customers are navigating complex journeys before and after they use Canvas Career.
Our goal is to make that journey simpler, faster, and more scalable.
We’re grateful for the partnership and insights shared during this session, and we’re excited to continue shaping the future of Canvas Career together.
