Thank you Renee. This helps however, I'm part of central IT and have been asked to export the gradebooks for all courses this term. Trying to be prepared should canvas go down again at the end of a semester. We've instructed instructors to download however in the event someone doesn't we are looking for a way to have a backup of all gradebooks. It seems that there should be a way to do a bulk export for admins through the UI or API but I haven't found it.

There's a "grade export" report in the admin settings. It's a snapshot in time of overall grades only for all classes, but better than nothing :). I'm wanting to do the same thing as you, but I'm still a bit api-illiterate!

Here's the info I received from our CSM:

"you can achieve a complete backup by combining a few different workflows:

1. Core Backup Components (Manual Methods)

To capture everything you mentioned, you can use these three distinct export paths:

Course Content (Shell): This creates a backup of your modules, assignments, and pages. Note that these files do not include student interactions or grades.
- How do I export a Canvas course?
Gradebook Data: You can export all student scores as a CSV file directly from the Gradebook.
- How do I export grades in the Gradebook?
Student Submissions: You can download all student-submitted files for a specific assignment as a single ZIP file.
- How do I download all student submissions for an assignment?

2. Feature Option: Offline Course Content

What it does: Once enabled at the account level, it allows instructors and students to download a course as an HTML package for read-only viewing without an internet connection.
Limitation: It is excellent for reviewing content and assignment descriptions, but it does not include interactive data like student submissions or gradebook data.
How do I view course content offline as an instructor?

3. Bulk/API

For a truly "bulk" approach that captures discussion forums and all submissions at once, we recommend an API-based approach. While there isn't a single endpoint for this, a script can be written to:

Loop through all courses.
Trigger Content Exports for the shells.
Fetch Discussion Topics (Full View) to get the entire threaded conversation history.
Download Submissions for all assignments by iterating through the submission history."

I may be the only person looking for this, but looking for a single button to export all grades for all courses for a superadmin seems to make sense to me from a system design standpoint. Relying on the instructors to do this and system to remain online has several failure points.
