Recording media with a disabled webcam in the RCE causes an error message during the save process

This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 5/20/26.

Summary:

When a user attempts to record media without their Webcam enabled through the RCE or on a Media Recording assignment with {{Assignment Enhancements - Student}} enabled, the recording fails to save and throws a "An error occurred uploading your media." message.

Expected Behavior:

Webcam Disabled recordings should still save and be usable.

Workaround:

Enabling any type of webcam or video source while recording your media will save the content as expected.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Open any area where the RCE is available other than Speedgrader
2. Click on Insert - Media - Upload/Record Media
3. Select video source to be “Webcam disabled“ and start recording
4. Attempt to save the recording
   1. Observe how a “An error occurred uploading your media.“ message is displaying
   2. The course files page and the user files page do not contain the recording.
