Issue with a grade not showing in the Gradebook of a course

Hi everyone.

I am currently having this issue: one of my student took yesterday a final exam twice (I had set it allowing my students to take it twice with LockDown Browser). But both attempts were incomplete: the student's notebook froze at one point. In order to let them exit the exam, we had to force an exit and reboot. When the student logged in again, they had to restart the exam as if it were a second attempt.

I marked the one with the highest grade and then added "fudge points" from the one with the lower score. In the Gradebook I then manually input the grade (74/100). But the grade does not show. And as a matter of fact the grade does not show in the column with the Final Exam grades, that is where it should appear.

This is what I currently see in the Assignment column:

The area is correctly in green because there has been a resubmission.

I can enter the grade (74/100 which is the result of the scores in the two attempts plus some fudge points I added for an extra credit assignment linked to the Final Exam). But the grade does not show both in the Assignment column but also (and this is the main concern) in the Final Exam one. Meaning that it is not counted in the Final grade of the course.

Hi Everyone involved in this exchange.

I sorted my grade issue. It was much simpler than I thought: the reason why student's grade was not showing was because in their first attempt (when the student's I-Pad accidentally froze and had to be rebooted) they had left unanswered 24 questions. Which they then did in their second attempt.

Therefore I did the following:

based on the answers provided in the second attempt, I added the points in the section of the first one where questions had been left blank for the I-Pad issue
then I re-set the quiz to calculate the highest score (received in the second attempt) and not the latest attempt

Now the grade is showing as it should.

@GuidoReverdito - this seems to be a complex issue and may be best resolved via contacting Canvas support.

But permit me to try to help - here I referenced the following guides:

I believe Canvas is recalculating the score based on attempt rules and ignoring the manual merge you performed. Using an explicit override or eliminating conflicting attempt data is the cleanest way to ensure the score appears and is included in the final grade.

Try one of these:

#1 - use a final grade override. If the combined score you calculated is what should count, enable the “Allow final grade override” option in the Gradebook settings and enter the student’s final score in the Override column. This explicitly tells Canvas to stop recalculating and to treat that value as authoritative.

#2 - temporarily change the attempt scoring rule. Edit the assignment and set the attempt rule to “Latest Attempt.” Save the assignment, return to the Gradebook, and reenter the score. In many cases this allows the grade to persist and count toward the final grade because Canvas is no longer trying to evaluate older attempts.

#3 - remove the invalid attempt data if possible. In SpeedGrader, look at the attempt selector and identify any frozen or incomplete attempt that should not count. If only one valid attempt remains, Canvas will usually accept the entered score normally.

Also, check that the assignment is in an assignment group that actually contributes to the final grade. An assignment in a zero percent group will accept grades but never count them. And confirm that the assignment or the specific student is not marked as Excused. Excused items display in green and can look graded, but they are excluded from final grade calculations.

Again, if this doesn't look like it applies, I'd then reach out to support. The Community helpers here won't have access to your course. 😊

@GuidoReverdito Are there possibly any questions in the quiz that require manual grading? If there is any question in the quiz attempt that does not have a grade, the overall grade will not show.

Hi! In addition to @james_whalley suggestion, I'm wondering if Respondus LB has been removed yet from the test. If it is still enabled for the quiz, it's possible that RLB is blocking you from making any changes (??). Just a thought…. I hope it gets figured out!

Indeed 24 questions in the quiz required manual grading.

But I marked other students' exams (manually grading those 24 questions) and nothing weird happened. Meaning that the final graded assigned appears in both the Group Assignment column and in the Final one.

LDB has not been removed yet.

But as I already wrote in my response to James' email, I did not remove it from other students' exams and everything worked smoothly.

I have not applied yet one of the solutions suggested by Jeff in his message at the beginning of this conversation (see them below) This is our last week of term and I have been super busy with no time to dedicate to the specific issue of the grade that does not show where it should in the Gradebook area.

I will do so as soon as possible and get back to you sharing a feedback on what I will see.
