Is it possible that you saved a link to your course as a bookmark or favorite within your web browser? If that is the case, then that is most likely the reason why you'd be taken into your course rather than the Canvas Dashboard. There are two solutions you can try:

The fact that the teacher's gradebook view only displays the letter grade in the "override" column makes it difficult for the teacher to review grades, as the numerical grade entered cannot be determined in that view.
